FOOTNOTES

Cor Da Rua (Street Colour) is a 2-month, 10-artist extravangaza of Brasilian urban art which will explore the vibrant sub-genre of graffiti, which has been one of the most significant roots of the global urban movement. The brainchild of Brighton"s acclaimed O Contemporary gallery, this is the most comprehensive show of its kind ever seen in the UK, and reflects growing international interest in urban artists coming out of Brazil.

Film: Based on the best seller by Fernando Morais and upon the true story of Olga Benário, the German-born Jewish wife of Brazilian communist leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During the dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945), when World War II began, Vargas decided to support the Allies. Olga was then arrested and sent to Nazi Germany, where she died in a concentration camp. An unforgettable film, emotionally gripping but artfully directed with an all star Brazilian cast including Fernanda Montenegro (2004)

Film: In 1925, Gabriela becomes cook, mistress, and then wife of Nacib, a bar owner in a small Brazilian coastal town run by the local colonels. Nacib becomes tired of Gabriela"s uneducated ways, and annuls the marriage when he finds her in bed with his friend Tonico. We then see the political ways of the town modernize slightly and Gabriela return as Nacib"s mistress. (1975)

Type of music/dance from the northeast of Brazil. On its centennial it has been officially recognized as National Cultural Heritage. Born in the State of Pernambuco and raised in the historical city of Olinda, Evaldo Parreira transforms the love and identification he has for his culture into a source of inspiration for his photos. Evaldo seeks to highlight special places and cultural manifestations of his people. He has also organized several photographic exhibitions, stressing the ethnic diversity and beauty of Brazilian people. Opening Night accompanied by Live Music

Film: Zuzu Angel was a hugely successful stylist who revealed Brazilian fashion to the rest of the world. During the seventies, Zuzu also fought a battle with the military dictatorship, due to the mysterious disappearance of his son Stuart. Stuart was part of the student movement against the dictatorship of the time. After being imprisoned, he was tortured and murdered by Airforce intelligence officers and quoted as a political missing person. It was when Zuzu decided to denounce the abuses committed during the dictatorship that he raised awareness, both in Brazil and abroad. (2006)

The play"s story engages with two starkly different sides of 1960s Rio society, with all its glamour and social problems. The narrative centres on the story of the love of the Poor Little Rich Girl for the Beggar Poet, thus breaking through the barriers of social class, a transgression which is also reflected in the dynamic innovation of Brazilian music of that era. The new production, starring Gui Tavares (guitar and voice), Cida de Assis (voice), Rogério Correa (voice) and Kleyton (percussion), will be performed in English, whilst maintaining its Brazilian charm. If you love good Brazilian music, don"t miss it!

Film: Daughters of the Wind address themes which are relevant to women all over the world, but in this small town in Minas Gerais, Brazil, the twin spectres of slavery and racism affect the characters in a profound way. In a brilliantly observed political and social depiction, the director deconstructs the usual stereotypical roles played by black actors in Brazilian soap operas, and replaces them with rich and multifaceted characters. The two sisters of the story meet again after years apart. One of them headed for the big city, trying to secure a career as an actress. The other stayed to look after their father. (1975)

Bonde Do Role play the freshest sunstroke pop around. Hailing from Curitiba, in Southern Brazil, Marina, Pedro and Gorky create rocking funk carioca. Their dance party electro punk is the sound of 2007, taking the Bailefunk rhythms of their homeland and mashing them up, rapping a barrage of Portugese slang even their native Brazillians can’t understand. March 2007 found Bonde touring North America with Diplo, who released their first single "Melo do Tabaco" on his Mad Decent label. This was after the band took the South by Southwest Festival in Austin by storm with their party-fuelled funk. “Bonde Do Role is like diggin through the garbage in Brazil and using the pieces and making a club mess turned up the volume plus 10. It’s like death samba metal bass with cooledit pro cause i already played out that "novo" beastie boys thing.” Diplo Plus special guests

Film: Benjamim Zambraia is a lonely man, a famous model with a tragic past. Some time in the past, he showed some officers the exact location where the woman he loved was hiding with her guerilla lover. As a result, the two were killed. One day, he casually meets a woman who looks very much like his former love, and this fact changes his life. Could she be the daughter of his great love? Or her reincarnation? (2003)
