Film: Since childhood Preta, Lena, Barbarah and Mayah have been fighting to fulfil their dream of making a living out of their music. With their rap group Antônia, they find a manager and begin to put on shows in bars and parties around Sao Paolo. Just as the dream seems to be coming true, their hopes are dashed by the daily trials which accompany poverty, chauvinism and violence, placing their friendship in jeopardy.

In partnership with Images of Black Women.
Dir Tata Amaral, Brazil 2006, 90 mins, subtitles, Cert 15 ()

Brazilian pianist, Emma Souza Lima, has given numerous performances in Brazil, the US and Europe. Her lecture recital celebrates the music of João Souza Lima and his contribution to Brazilian and international composition. The works have a strong French influence but are full of the exciting rhythms of South America.

Described as "the doyen of the Brazilian singer-songwriters" Vinicius Cantuaria is one of the world"s most sublime artists. His gentle, elegiac, subtly subversive music places him in a lineage that includes the great Tom Jobim (whose Vino Sonhando he covers on "Cymbals") and Caetano Veloso (who recorded his song Lua E Estrella).

The MONOBLOCO SHOW features several percussion and rhythm instrumentalists selected from the Carioca music scene, playing samba as well as funk & pop music. The group recorded its first CD in 2002 and has been travelling through several cities in Brazil giving workshops and performances of their rhythmic feast. Their repertoire ranges from traditional sambas to classics of Brazilian Popular Music such as Tim Maia, Jorge Benjor, Chico Buarque, Na&accedil;ão Zumbi, Luiz Gonzaga and many other major names. The MONOBLOCO SHOW is a real party that has satisfied the widest range of audiences.

Film: A semi-fictional account of the BOPE, the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police. It is the second feature film and first fiction film of director Jose Padilha, who had previously directed the acclaimed documentary Bus 174. The script was written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Braulio Mantovani, based on the book Elite da Tropa by sociologist Luiz Eduardo Soares and two former BOPE captains, Andre Batista and Rodrigo Pimentel.
